Autogenous welding processes only require part of the existing base metal to be melted and this is sufficient, provided that the joint is already mechanically close-fitting before welding.

The pieces are then welded together usually with one of two processes . autogenous welding-that is welding without filler rod, this is useful when finally smoothing the welding joints as it reduces the amount filing / grinding / linishing needed or almost eliminates it altogether.
